Real-time Cyber Safeguards on Claude
As part of our ongoing safety commitments as described in our Claude Opus 4.6 announcement, we are rolling out new cyber safeguards for Claude Opus 4.6. These safeguards are designed to automatically detect and block requests that may indicate prohibited cybersecurity usage under our Usage Policy.
How this works
These new safeguards cover cybersecurity activities that are almost always used maliciously and have little to no legitimate defensive application, such as mass data exfiltrations and ransomware code development. If such activities are detected in a request, the request will be blocked. For API requests, these blocks will be handled as streaming refusals, similar to existing CBRN defenses.
In some cases, these guardrails may also block dual-use cybersecurity activities with legitimate defensive purposes, such as vulnerability discovery. If you work in defensive cybersecurity and believe your usage should be exempt from these cyber defenses, please fill out the form below to share feedback about your use case.
Why we’re doing this
We continuously evaluate our models against emerging threats, and test new and evolve existing defensive approaches. Claude's capabilities have reached a point where the same capabilities that help cybersecurity defenders could also be leveraged by attackers seeking to cause harm. We take that risk seriously. Based on our safety reviews and threat intelligence, we believe a stronger, real-time layer of cybersecurity defense is now warranted on our most capable models.
This work is ongoing. We'll continue to test, refine, and add safeguards over time.
Warnings
As part of our safety process, we warn users if we believe their prompts are violating our Usage Policy. For API customers, these warnings are linked to ongoing thresholds of violative behavior across their entire API account.
If you believe we’ve made a mistake in issuing you a warning, please email [email protected] with the details of your situation and your account information.
