What it is
If Claude Code reaches your plan’s five-hour usage limit partway through a response, it may keep working briefly so it can reach a reasonable stopping point rather than stopping mid-step (the “Wrap-Up Allowance”). While this is happening, you’ll see a message like “Usage limit reached · wrapping up.”
The Wrap-Up Allowance is a small, capped amount of additional usage that varies by plan. It is not unlimited, and it may not be enough to complete the task Claude was working on. When it runs out, the response ends and your plan’s normal usage limits apply until they reset.
These terms supplement the Consumer Terms of Service (for Pro and Max subscribers) or the Commercial Terms of Service (for Team subscribers), which continue to apply to your use of Claude Code.
Who is eligible
The Wrap-Up Allowance is available only when all of the following are true:
You’re on a Pro or Max plan, or on a Team plan with a Premium seat, and your account is in good standing.
You’re using Claude Code version 2.1.277 or later (in the terminal, an IDE extension, or the Code tab in the Claude desktop app), signed in with your Claude account.
Your account and organization have each existed for at least the minimum period we set for this feature. We don't publish this period, and we may change it. Until both your account and your organization meet it, the Wrap-Up Allowance won't apply.
Your account is included in the rollout. We’re rolling this out gradually, and it isn’t available on every account.
The Wrap-Up Allowance does not apply when you use Claude Code with an API key or through a third-party cloud provider (for example, Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI), and it does not apply to chats in the Claude app.
How it works
What triggers it. It applies only to a response that is already in progress when you reach your five-hour usage limit. A new message sent after you’ve reached your limit is handled as usual: you can see when your limit resets.
How often.
Pro: Up to once per weekly usage period, whether or not the full allowance is used that time.
Max and Team (Premium seats): When you reach a five-hour usage limit, within your weekly limit.
How it counts. Usage during wrap-up counts toward your weekly usage limit like any other usage. It does not increase your weekly limit.
How it ends. The response ends when it finishes, when the allowance runs out (the step in progress completes and the next one does not start), or when you interrupt it.
Nothing to claim. The Wrap-Up Allowance applies automatically when you're eligible. It can’t be requested, saved, or carried over to a later response or usage period.
If you have usage credits turned on
The included Wrap-Up Allowance is used first. After that, the response continues on usage credits at your standard rates, subject to your usage settings and any spend limit you or your admin have set. The Wrap-Up Allowance does not turn on usage credits or change your usage settings. Usage credits are governed by the Usage Credit Terms and, where applicable, the Supplemental Credit Terms. The included amount may differ when usage credits are enabled.
What it is not
The Wrap-Up Allowance is not a credit, promotional credit, or usage credit. It has no balance, and it can’t be applied toward usage credit charges, subscription fees, seat charges, or taxes.
It has no cash value and is not transferable. It can’t be exchanged or refunded.
It is not part of any plan’s usage limits or included features. It doesn’t change your plan’s limits or price, or anything you’ve paid for.
Not receiving the Wrap-Up Allowance, or receiving less than you expected, is not a basis for a refund or credit.
Changes and ending
We may change the amount, frequency, or eligibility of the Wrap-Up Allowance, or pause or discontinue it, at any time and without notice. It is provided at our discretion and is not a guaranteed part of any plan. As part of the rollout, some eligible accounts may not receive it, or may receive it differently.
We may withhold the Wrap-Up Allowance from any account or organization if we determine there has been fraud, abuse, an attempt to get around usage limits (for example, through multiple accounts or automation designed to exploit the allowance), or a violation of these terms or our Usage Policy.
Why didn’t I get it?
Reasons may include:
You’re on Pro and already used it this weekly usage period.
Your Claude Code version is older than 2.1.277.
Your account or organization isn’t currently eligible, including because it was created recently or isn't yet included in the rollout.
The request was a new message sent after you reached your limit, not a response already in progress.
You’re using an API key or a third-party cloud provider.
If you believe you were charged for usage credits unexpectedly, contact support and include the approximate time.
