This article lists every keyboard shortcut in Claude Docs, along with the keys that work in tables, images, links, and the list of doc tabs. For step-by-step instructions, see "Use Claude Docs with a keyboard" in Get started with Claude Docs. To get into and out of the artifact panel, see Use artifacts with a keyboard or screen reader, which also explains what focus means, what to do on a Mac laptop or in Safari, and how the tables show keys.
Claude Docs is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. It's on by default for all except Enterprise plans. On Enterprise plans, it turns on by default on October 15, 2026, and owners can turn it on before then in Organization settings > Artifacts.
This article calls a doc's tabs doc tabs, so they aren't confused with the Tab key. Shortcuts are written for Mac first, with the Windows keys in parentheses. Return is the key labeled Enter on Windows keyboards.

The list of doc tabs
To open the list of doc tabs, press Escape to leave the text, and then press Return on the doc tabs button. If focus isn't already on a doc tab, press Tab until you reach the list. If the list of doc tabs is shown beside the text, the doc tabs button doesn't open it; see the paragraph after this table.
Action | Key |
Next or previous doc tab, or heading | Down arrow or Up arrow |
First or last item in the list | Home or End |
Show or hide the rows under a doc tab: its subtabs, and any headings listed under the doc tab you're on | Right arrow or Left arrow |
Open the doc tab and move into it, or move to a heading in the text | Return or Space |
Close the list | Escape |
If the list of doc tabs is shown beside the text, the doc tabs button doesn't open it. Press Tab from the doc's toolbar to reach it. In a doc you can only view or comment on, Escape from the text goes straight to the list, and if the toolbar has no buttons for you, Tab from the panel's header reaches it too. With a screen reader, it's the "Tabs" landmark. In it, the Down arrow and Up arrow keys move between rows, and Home and End go to the first and last. Return or Space opens a doc tab, and focus stays in the list. The Right arrow key shows what's under a row (its subtabs, and on the doc tab you're on, its headings, if it has two or more), and the Left arrow key hides it again. Return or Space on a heading moves you to it in the text. In a doc you can edit, F2 renames a doc tab. Shift+F10 (Fn+Shift+F10 on a Mac laptop) opens a doc tab's menu.
Keys inside the toolbars and menus
In the formatting toolbar, which you reach with Cmd+F6 (Ctrl+F6 on Windows) after selecting text: the Left arrow and Right arrow keys move between buttons, Home and End move to the first and last, Return or Space uses a button, the Down arrow key opens a button's drop-down, and Escape or Tab goes back to the text.
In the doc's toolbar above the text, where Escape from the text usually lands (on the doc tabs button, at the start of the toolbar): the Left arrow and Right arrow keys move between buttons, Home and End move to the first and last, and Return uses a button.
In the insert menu (/), the mention list (@), and the emoji list (:): keep typing to filter, press the Down arrow and Up arrow keys to move, Return or Tab to choose, and Escape to dismiss.
Tables, images, videos, and links
In a table, pressing Tab in the last cell adds a row, and Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) removes it again. With nothing selected, Cmd+F6 (Ctrl+F6 on Windows) from a cell moves to the table's "More actions" button, where Return opens a menu for commenting on, reacting to, or deleting the table.
To add or delete a row or column, press Shift+F10 in a table cell (Fn+Shift+F10 on a Mac laptop). On a Windows keyboard that has a Menu key, that key does the same. A menu opens with focus on its first item. With a screen reader, you hear "Cell actions."
Press the Down arrow and Up arrow keys to move, Return or Space to choose, and Escape or Tab to go back to the cell. After you insert a row or column from this menu, Cmd+Y (Ctrl+Y on Windows) inserts another one.
With more than one cell selected, the menu also has "Merge cells." When a table has at least two rows below its header row and no cells merged across rows, the menu also has "Sort column ascending" and "Sort column descending." They sort by the column the cursor is in.
Move the cursor onto an image, video, or chart with the arrow keys to select it as one object. Cmd+F6 (Ctrl+F6 on Windows) then moves to its buttons, and Escape goes back to the text.
On an image, one of those buttons is "More actions." Move to it with the Left arrow or Right arrow key, and then press Return. A menu opens with focus on its first item. Move to "Edit alt text" with the Down arrow or Up arrow key, and then press Return. Type a description of the image for people who can't see it, and then press Return to save or Escape to cancel.
Important: Typing while an object is selected replaces it. Press Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) to bring it back.
With the cursor inside a link, Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows) opens the link's actions: open, copy, edit, and remove.
To open a mention of a doc tab or of another doc, move the cursor onto the mention with the arrow keys to select it, and then press Option+Return (Alt+Enter on Windows). Return on its own doesn't open it.
To open a comment from the text, move the cursor into the commented text and press Cmd+Option+M (Ctrl+Alt+M on Windows) with nothing selected. Focus moves to the comment, and Escape puts the cursor back where it was. If the same words have more than one comment, press the shortcut again from the text to open the next one.
On some Windows keyboard layouts, such as German, Russian, and Greek, Ctrl+Alt+M still adds a comment to selected text, but it doesn't open the comment at the cursor. Reach the comment from the comments beside the text instead.
In a doc you can only view, Tab moves between the links in the text, mentions of a doc tab or another doc, any wide table (so that you can scroll it with the arrow keys), video play buttons, and the buttons beside headings that collapse or expand a section, if the doc has them (each one appears when focus reaches it). Return on a mention opens it, and Return or Space on a heading's button collapses or expands its section. Return on a link to a website shows its address with buttons to open or copy it. Press Return on "Open link" to open the website in a new tab. If focus is on "Full URL" instead, press the Right arrow key once to reach "Open link."
